Can the computer on my car make my air conditioner leak? The answer is yes. We recently had a 2017 Chevrolet Impala come in to check the A/C system. When connecting the gauge set we discovered no refrigerant in the system. We then added some to check for a leak and could actually hear the refrigerant escaping. Taking our refrigerant leak detector to find the source of the problem we found the evaporator core in the dash leaking profusely. Performing a Technical Service Bulletin search we discovered a recall #N182186880 for 2016-2018 Chevrolet Impala's. The bulletin explains that the program in the computer runs the A/C compressor too long causing ice to build up on the evaporator core. As the ice continues to expand it actually breaks the tubes causing the refrigerant leak. If you have one of these vehicles GM has extended the warranty for 6 years and or 72,000 miles to cover this situation. "Why do I smell gasoline when I am near my car?"  Have you ever had a strong whiff of gas and wondered if it's your car or somebody else's in the parking lot? You drive home and you may or may not get the odor of gas. The next morning you leave for work and there it is again. Now you are wondering what to do now. Check around your vehicle to see if there is a noticeable leak under the car. If not and the odor is strong enough towing it to the shop is recommended. Gasoline odors can be caused by a leak somewhere in the fuel evaporative emissions systems. Some possibilities include a rusted fuel line, fuel seeping by connections in the fuel system or an emissions system hose that has split open. This was a blog post from a while ago but it bears reposting, especially while there is a rebate on Hankook tires. There are several ways to determine if you need new tires. One way is to insert a quarter upside down into the tire's tread. If you can see the top of Ole George's head then your tread is measuring 4/32 and the tire needs to be replaced. Another sign that you need new tires is the presence of grooves or cracks in the sidewall. Other indicators are blisters and bulges because they can quickly become the source of a dangerous blowout. In addition, feeling too much vibration when driving can be a sign of several issues. Your tires may need balancing or you may need an alignment. It is hot outside and my vehicle’s air conditioner is not working. How much will it cost to fix? There are many reasons why your vehicle is not producing cold air. The most common problem is a lack of refrigerant because of a leak in the system. Leaks can sometimes be difficult to find if it takes a long time to seep out. In these cases we will evacuate and recharge the system and add dye to help determine where the leak is. Sometimes it is an electrical problem. If the compressor is not operating it needs to be determined why. Is it a fuse, relay, sensor etc. As you can see there are many reasons why the air conditioner is not working. Why do I see a puddle of water under my car? We get this question often when the weather turns hot and humid. What you actually see is condensation from the air conditioner dripping on the ground. The air conditioner is in reality removing the heat from the air and dispersing it at the condenser that sits in front of the radiator. A byproduct of a properly working air conditioning unit is the water you see on the ground which should be clear. If there is any color to the liquid it is probably something else leaking and should be diagnosed. I love my Wrangler but my frame has rust holes. Can it be saved? If it is rusted in the most common areas, absolutely! There are kits available that allow us to repair the frame so you can enjoy your Jeep again.
